Smart home automation for apartments in Vizag: what to know
Most smart home enquiries we get in Visakhapatnam are for flats, from 2BHKs in Madhurawada to large apartments in MVP Colony and Seethammadhara. Here is what actually matters when you automate one.

Finished flat or new flat?
The first question is not which brand but where the flat is in its life. In a flat you already live in, the walls are done, so the automation has to fit inside the existing switchboards. Wireless and Zigbee modules sit behind your switches or replace them with touch panels of the same size, and nothing is chiselled. In a new flat at finishing stage, you can still change switchboard sizes, add a neutral wire where it is missing, and plan panel positions before the putty, which gives a cleaner result for very little extra.
What people usually automate first
- Lights and fans in the living room and bedrooms, with scenes such as Good night and Movie time.
- AC and TV through an IR blaster, so you can switch the AC on before you reach home.
- The main door with a digital lock that opens by fingerprint, code, card or app.
- Curtains in the living room, often added later.
- A video doorbell or a camera at the door.
You do not need to do everything at once. A good system lets you start with two rooms and add more without redoing anything.
Wi-Fi decides how smart the flat feels
Every smart device depends on the Wi-Fi. In a typical Vizag flat, the internet provider fits one router in the hall, and the far bedroom gets a weak signal. That is the number one reason for an app that "sometimes doesn't respond". Planning one or two access points by the size of the flat fixes it, and it is far easier to run the cable before the false ceiling closes.
Apartment association rules
Changes inside your own flat are usually fine. Check your association rules for anything that touches common areas: a camera in the corridor, a video doorbell outside the door, or changes to the main door frame for a lock. We can advise on this during the site visit.
Things people regret skipping
- A neutral wire at every switchboard. Most smart switches need it.
- Deeper switch boxes where modules will sit behind the switches.
- A network point near the TV and in the study.
- Asking for physical buttons that still work if the internet is down. Good systems do this; check before you buy.
How long does it take?
For a finished 2BHK or 3BHK, installation is usually one to three days, depending on how many rooms and devices. For a new flat, we plan with your electrician during wiring and install after painting.
Common questions
Can I automate my flat without breaking walls?
Yes. Wireless and Zigbee modules fit inside the existing switchboards, so the walls and paint are not touched.
Do smart switches need a neutral wire?
Most do. Older flats sometimes lack a neutral at the switchboard. We check this at the site visit and suggest the simplest fix.
Will the lights work if the internet goes down?
With the right system, yes. The touch panels and switches still work locally; only remote control from outside the home needs the internet.
