Home automation wiring checklist before construction
Most of the cost and mess in home automation comes from things that were not planned before the walls closed. This checklist is what we mark on every drawing we review. Share it with your electrician.

At every switchboard
- Neutral wire brought to every switchboard, not only the sockets. Most smart switches and modules need it.
- Deeper boxes (at least 60 mm) where modules will sit behind switches.
- Standard module sizes agreed with us before the boxes go in, so touch panels fit without gaps.
Lighting
- Group lighting circuits by how you will use them: cove lights, spot lights and the main light on separate circuits, so scenes can control each.
- If you want DALI dimming, run the DALI control pair with the light cables.
- Choose dimmable drivers for the lights you plan to dim.
Curtains and blinds
- A power point at the top corner of every window that will get a motorised curtain, hidden by the pelmet or false ceiling.
Gate, doors and outdoors
- A conduit from the house to the gate for gate automation power and control.
- Power and a cable at the main door for a video doorbell; check the door frame suits the digital lock you choose.
- Points for outdoor lights on a schedule.
Cameras and Wi-Fi
- Network cable (Cat6) to each camera position and to a ceiling point on every floor for Wi-Fi access points.
- One network cabinet location where the router, recorder and switch will live, with power and ventilation.
- A network point behind the TV and in the study.
Home theatre
- Speaker cable routes and a projector point decided before the false ceiling. See home theatre.
Before you plaster
Take photos of every wall with the conduits visible and a tape measure in the frame. They save hours later. If you are in Andhra Pradesh or nearby Odisha, send us your electrical drawing on WhatsApp and we will mark these points for free. Also read what to decide before the false ceiling goes in.
Common questions
Why does home automation need a neutral wire?
Smart switches need a small constant supply to stay connected. Without a neutral at the switchboard, many smart switches cannot be fitted or behave poorly.
What depth of switch box is needed for smart modules?
At least 60 mm is a safe choice where modules will sit behind switches. Confirm with your installer before the boxes are fixed.
Can I prepare the wiring now and automate later?
Yes. Neutral wires, deeper boxes, conduits and network cables cost little during construction and make automation easy whenever you are ready.
